About Firefox 43, New XKit and Extension Signing

A lot of you people using Firefox probably already realized: The update to Firefox 43 completely disables New XKit due to it not being signed/verified.

Let me begin by saying that all of us are truly sorry for this inconvenience.
We are trying our best to fix this but currently are unable to give an ETA on how soon this is going to happen.

Mozilla published their plan for extension verification in Feburary, so even when the New XKit project started in July we knew that it was something we were going to have to deal with eventually. We submitted our extension initially to Mozilla on July 20^th, and did not hear back from them until November 16^th_, when Mozilla removed our extension from their online gallery, telling as that we do not meet their requirements to be a publicly listed extension. We then submitted as an “unlisted” extension, which was theoretically a more lenient process. This time they got back to us within about a week, but they would not still not accept the extension the way it was currently written.

There are a lot of technical details that go into the situation, but the bottom line is that we need to rewrite the core of how XKit handles extensions almost completely before getting signed. We’re currently about half-way through that process, and hope to have something to share with you as soon as we can pass validation. The biggest downside that comes with this rewrite though will be our reaction time—we will have to update the entire extension whenever we want to change one of the individual packaged extensions, and third-party (non-signed) XKit Extensions will no longer work.  

Until signing happens though, we can offer you 3 workarounds:

1. Use another browser like Chrome or Opera with New XKit. This is the best solution, as it allows you to still be on the most up-to-date browsers while also using New XKit. You can grab the Chrome version of New XKit from the Chrome Web Store and find instructions for using New XKit with Opera on our blog
   
2. Downgrade Firefox to v42. This is less recommended then option 1, but more recommended the option 3. Mozilla provides instructions on how to do this on their wiki
3. Disable signature checks in Firefox v43. (NOT recommended)

WARNING! Signed extensions a security feature added by Mozilla. Disabling that feature may put you at risk of installing viruses and ad-ware! 

Additionally, this fix only works until Firefox v44 hits and the switch gets removed.

If you still want to proceed, type “about:config” in your Address Bar, look for “xpinstall.signatures.required” and double click on it so it has the value “false”.

Week in Review: December 04 - December 11

Before we get to the week in review, we’d like to remind you that FixMyPosts is not an official New XKit extension. Please refer all bug reports to its developer, thetimeisneveright. There have been a lot of people having problems with posts lacking formatting, posts being all in a line, posts having weird blockquotes, and posts having text content disappearing. All of these issues have been known to be caused by FixMyPosts! If you have FixMyPosts installed, try using Reblog Display Options instead—RDO is an official New XKit extension that, in its “nested” format, restores the formatting of your dashboard, and is supported by the New XKit Team.

Bug Fixes

• Anti-Capitalism v1.2.3: Don’t you hate video ads? We do too! Now you can block video ads so that you won’t be reminded about… whatever it is that’s going on in the world of capitalism.
• Go-To Dash v1.2.0: The new blog buttons were making a mess of everything! Guys, learn to clean up after yourselves. It’s a vital skill you’ll need as adults.
  
• One-Click Postage v4.1.10: Fixed the “Replace caption, not append” option so that it does exactly what it says on the tin, as well as fixed an issue with blog controls not working. Seriously, the mess on that one was so bad that it spilled onto other extensions!
  
• Outbox v0.9.8: Actually save messages when sending them from the dashboard or inbox.

New Features

• Find Inactives v0.3.0: Added an option to filter by blogs that haven’t been updated in a week.
• Pokés v0.4.1: Added a Pokémon counter so now you can figure out if you’ve really caught ‘em all. In addition, we fixed the yellow Floette sprite and some Pokémon display names.
  
• XCloud v1.1.0: If you ever wanted to bypass the 5 MB limit of uploading to XCloud, you can do it by importing and exporting locally. You’re welcome.

Changes in Review

• Find Inactives v0.3.1: Make it so that this extension doesn’t hang when the language isn’t English.
• Messaging Tweaks v1.5.0: If you don’t plan on sharing posts or just have a deep-seated fear/hatred of paper airplanes, you can hide it. I wonder if there’s a word for “fear of paper airplanes”?

Hey all! You may or may not of noticed that tumblr is rolling out some backend changes to how the “in-blog controls” (the buttons at the top-right of blog.tumblr.com pages) work. This means that Go-To-Dash, One-Click Postage, Post Archiver and others have all been having a hard time working on post permalink pages.

We just released an update that fixes the two most popular, Go-To-Dash and One-Click Postage, and we’re working on the other extensions.

If you already have New XKit, you should be seeing the update within a few hours (or you can go to the “Other” panel in your preferences and click “Update All” to get it immediately). If you don’t already have New XKit, you can grab it from the Chrome store or here for Firefox.

Week in Review: November 27 - December 04

The holidays are steadily approaching, so we’d like to raise some hype by providing you the latest in bug fixes and features.

Bug Fixes

• Auto Tagger v0.6.7: Auto tags no longer stack on top of each other when creating new posts that require a URL or an upload. We had to straighten out the tags and lecture them about safety. One of the tags could get hurt!
• Blacklist v2.7.7: Added a missing word so that XKit doesn’t sound like it’s talking too fast on a phone with really bad reception.
• Header Options v2.4.0: The developer who made this change would like to preface this fix with a message: “I want you all to know that I feel personally victimized by Tumblr’s coding decisions, and would like to apologize for the sins I have committed herein.” In other news, this extension now acts friendlier on mobile devices.
• Limit People v0.2.3: Don’t hide all posts in the side window. That would, like, totally make this totally useless. Totally.
• Old Sidebar v1.1.2: Some of our extensions are just really mean, aren’t they? We’ve prevented Old Sidebar from crushing the crushes grid on the Following page.
• Soft Refresh v0.5.5: Clicking on the Tumblr logo now performs a soft refresh again. A gentler refresh. The lightest, most delicate refresh.

New Features

• Messaging Tweaks v1.4.0: A couple of things happened. First, this extension now only runs on pages where the messaging button exists. Second, we’ve added the option to remove usernames from messages so that it won’t be so cluttered.
• Pokés v0.3.0: Catch Pokémon on your dashboard!!11!!!1! In addition, we made Cosplay Pikachu all female, made clicking notifications bring you to the Bulbapedia, and provided optional backgrounds for Pokémon for those you who use Tumblr with your own custom themes. And before you ask: yes, we’ve heard you asking for a way to rename Pokémon and battle other people. Don’t worry, we have lots in store for you!
  
• Reblog Display Options v1.3.0: We heard you guys liked options, so we added two new ones: a reverse rainbow scheme and alternating backgrounds, which will lightly highlight reblogs in alternating gray and new comments in blue.

Changes in Review

• Messaging Tweaks v1.4.1: Gotta make sure that :+1: emoji works properly.
• Editable Reblogs v3.0.5: There are two incoming fixes. The first restores the green reblog symbol and the second redirects you back to the blog page you reblogged from.

Messaging Tweaks 1.3 Update

We extended Messaging Tweak’s functionality again and totally forgot to announce it!

Lots of people have been asking for it, so today we are giving you a bunch of notification options! Don’t miss your IM messages ever again!

You can now have a sound play every time your partner sends you a message, make the text in your tab change or even have Desktop Notifications if you’re not in the proper tab!

Additionally, we bring you emojis now! You can use every emoji from http://www.emoji-cheat-sheet.com/ (+an easter egg one, let’s see if you can find it!), so go wild!

Blank comboboxes in Firefox fixed!

A lot of you that use Firefox have reported weird behavior regarding the comboboxes of the XKit Control Panel lately, specifically them being blank but options can still be selected and change.

With the update of the internal XKit Preferences extension to 6.0.3, this should be fixed! Either wait for the update or force an update under XKit Control Panel > Other > Update All > Update all my extensions

Editable Reblogs 3.0.4 – return of the dropdown button and other matters

Today we are releasing Editable Reblogs 3.0.4. This update to the ER extension contains a number of major fixes, including:

• Restoring the dropdown post button (including post scheduling and private posting)
  
• Fixing a bug which was causing the wrong date to be attached to edited posts.
  

We’d also like to apologize again for any confusion around the interface changes in the previous version of ER. Our solution for editable reblogs at this point basically bypasses Tumblr’s interface completely and adds our own in order to solve some major bugs we were encountering; the three-button interface was always meant to be temporary in order to get those bug fixes out the door fast, but we underestimated how much of an impact that would have on many people’s Tumblr use, so we’re glad to be able to restore the dropdown to you!

(Some of you told us you liked the three buttons, and we’ve heard you too! If there’s enough support they might come back as a tweak. :) )

In the same vein, this has also been a catalyst for us to start thinking about a better approach to beta testing big extensions like this before releasing them to everyone, so keep an eye out for that hopefully coming soon.

not a huge deal, but we were taken off from the firefox store for a little bit as we continue to try to work through the signing issues and changes coming down the pipe in future firefox versions.

shouldn’t impact you guys at all, but if you/someone you know doesn’t have xkit installed and is looking to install it on firefox, they’ll need to grab the raw xpi files from github. we’ve updated the links in our headers accordingly.

hopefully we’ll get approved by mozilla and back into the store within the next few weeks—this was mainly a technical/procedural issue as far as i’m aware.
