Is there a way you can update xkit without me having to go to extensions and clicking the developers mode and updating it that way? The old xkit used to update on its own.

Yes, XKit will automatically update given enough time on its own. The going to extensions workaround is only for people who want to make sure it updates as quickly as possible.
