we at new-xkit-extension can’t confirm the authenticity of this information, but seems consistent with the announcement and what staff has said about the update (that it was more a replacement for fanmail then replies)

no guarantees, because we have a lot of followers and our askbox is almost constantly pretty ridiculous, but drop us an ask and we’ll test it out.

can sideblogs get messages?

yes! as long as the blog isn’t a group blog (with more then one user) or a private blog (it looks as if tumblr expects to be able to support group blogs in the future, and just doesn’t yet, but that’s also unconfirmed)

I know the blog i’m trying to message isn’t a private or group blog, but I still can’t find them

right now, if a blog you’re trying to message is hidden from search results and you’re not mutuals, you can’t message them the normal way. Instead, you have to go to their blog page, and find the “message” link in the upper right-hand corner. Clicking that will allow you to message them.
