Resolution for People Unable to Update Editable Reblogs on Firefox

We have located a solution for those people who have the Editable Reblogs extension installed on New XKit on Firefox, but were having trouble updating it from 1.0.9 to 2.0.0 (now 2.0.1).

It is likely, if you were encountering this problem, that you are running on one of the 7.6.x versions of New XKit, and Firefox has not auto-updated you to 7.7.0 because the extension is unsigned (we’re working on this but it’s a separate issue).

Note: If you are on 7.5.x or below, you are on the old XKit which we do not support, and need to uninstall it completely and install the extension from the link below instead.

What you will need to do is manually update to 7.7.0 by going to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-xkit/ and clicking “Add To Firefox” – this will install 7.7.0 over your existing copy of New XKit and will maintain all your existing settings. After it is installed, you may need to close and reopen your browser to get XKit to work again.

Once you’re on 7.7.0 of the main New XKit extension, open your XKit control panel, navigate to the Editable Reblogs control panel, click Update, and confirm that you have updated to version 2.0.1!

Reminder For Firefox XKit Users - Turn Off Private Browsing

We are still looking into why Editable Reblogs isn’t updating for some Firefox users. However, in response to a few other Firefox issues we have been fielding in our support chat, we would like to issue a reminder to anyone who is having issues with running XKit on Firefox:

Be sure you are not using Private Browsing. New-Xkit is not submitted to Firefox’s app store in a way which allows this and will only work in non-private mode, regardless of how old XKit worked.

As always, feel free to contact us with any questions. Thanks!

XKit for Mobile: Sort Of™

We just updated XKit to have very minimal functionality on Tumblr’s mobile site. This means that Firefox for Android users (and hopefully Safari for iOS users once we get that funded) can add XKit extensions and use a couple features.

Word of warning: the extension browser is still formatted for desktop and therefore a pain in the ass to use. It should be painful but functional, at least until we redesign it for mobile. Consider this a very early Beta until the dust settles.

Features we know work:

  • Wrap tags (in Tweaks)
  • Anti-Capitalism
  • Remove mobile app banner (new mobile-only option in Tweaks)

Features we know don’t work:

  • Anything that adds extra buttons at the bottom of posts (Post Archiver, etc.)
  • Timestamps
  • Anything that alters the post window (Editable Reblogs, View My Tags, etc.)
  • Anything that requires the sidebar to work properly

Everything else you may want to try comes under a common sense disclamer. We haven’t removed the option to install things that don’t work yet, so don’t download Tags on Sidebar and expect things to work on mobile where the sidebar isn’t even a thing. Things that cause horrible breakage should be reported to new-xkit-support.

Any info if Xkit will work on the Firefox (update) 41.0b1? The update installed itself once I restarted Firefox and both the old and new Xkit give the message 'not verified' and they don't show up on the dashboard. Everything works fine on Firefox 40.0b9 which I reinstalled (I also set the option 'no automatic update' on). Also thank you so much for fixing Xkit! :)

Firefox 41 (which is currently in beta) requires all extensions to be signed by Mozilla. We haven’t been signed yet, and it’ll be 6 weeks while before 41 gets released, so we have time to sort out the situation before the update hits the regular public.

In the meantime, you can go to about:config and turn off xpinstall.signatures.required.

I am using Firefox 39.0.3 on Windows 8. The problem I am having is that the new xkit WILL NOT work. I have uninstalled all of my other addons (Adblocker). I have restarted Firefox. I've even restarted my computer. I've tried re-downloading the addon countless times from the one you have linked on your blog. It will say on my addons page in Firefox that I have the "New Xkit" installed but when I go to my dashboard the xkit symbol is not there! Please help!

There’s troubleshooting information on this bug in our FAQ. If the problem persists, submit an issue on Github, or send an ask if you are unable to use Github.

Would having multiple browsers open interfere with the function of Xkit? As in, different instances of Chrome, each logged into a different account? Because I'm having everything disappear after a few refreshes if I keep more than one or two instances open.

I’m not sure how Chrome handles cookies, but as long as the different sessions are using different sets of cookies you should be fine.

On Firefox, for example, the Multifox extension doesn’t work right because the profiles share cookies. However, I have Firefox (personal tumblr) and Firefox Developer Edition (xkit tumblr) open simultaneously without issue.

It should be pretty obvious if it’s not working—usually one blog will be unable to use One Click Postage if you’re having cookie issues. What do you mean by everything disappearing?
