Update on Retags Extension

The good news: Tumblr is bringing replies back. The bad news: they changed the design of the notes display, which broke the Retags extension. The XKit team is aware of this issue and working on a fix which should be out soon.

Additionally, some of you may have noticed that TagViewer and ReplyViewer have only been showing a small amount of tags/replies on some posts. We’re still investigating this problem, but it appears that when a post hits approximately 1,000 notes, the amount of replies or tags you can see drops off sharply. This doesn’t seem to be something we can fix immediately, or possibly at all, but we’ll keep looking into it. So far, this only affects posts that are about 2 months old or newer, but it’s possible that older and older posts will be affected as time goes on. We’ll make sure to let you know more as more information becomes available, and you can track the progress of this issue on github here: https://github.com/new-xkit/XKit/issues/1003

EDIT: its possible this may have also been an artifact of the replies changes, and preliminary testing (so far only one of our devs has the new update) suggests that this may not be an issue with the new notes popup.

Thanks for your patience; as always, you can get in touch with us by sending an ask to @new-xkit-support or @new-xkit-discussion or visiting our live support chat. Audio+ 0.4.3: Pop Out Controls

It happens to the best of us. We scroll away from a playing audio post, loving and appreciating its heartfelt music, promising to cherish its tunes for the next four minutes. We whisper sweet nothings to the audio post as it disappears up our dashes, gone from our eyes but not our hearts or our ears.

But then we see a Vine. A Vine that promises to scintillate and stupefy if only we could unmute it for just six seconds. A Vine whose whole experience would change our lives if only we could just pause the lovely music playing in our ears for just six seconds.

Let’s dare to take those six seconds back. In Audio+ version 0.4.3, if you scroll away from a playing audio post this cute little BB-8 impersonator will follow you until you close it, helpfully providing the pause and play buttons your short attention span needs.

(2016-02-03) One-Click-Postage only showing 5 blogs

A lot of you probably already noticed that One-Click-Postage is only showing 5 blogs in the drop down. Rest assured, we know about it and are actively trying to fix it!

Tumblr changed something in the backend which broke our blog detection, but our team is actively trying to find a new, reliable way to detect the blogs and we’ll update XKit as soon as we can!

We’ll let you guys know when it’s fixed, but it should only be a little bit longer.

Mac users rejoice! Four months ago, your generous donations allowed us to begin development on a version of New XKit for Safari. Today, we are pleased to announce that we have finally passed Apple review and are available on the Safari Extensions Gallery.

This is the first ever release of New XKit supporting Safari. We would like to thank Avi, Cris, Nathan, Jonathan, Miles, and our anonymous donors for making this possible.

New XKit Town Hall

We’ve been working on New XKit for awhile. If we look back, we can see all the progress we’ve made: currently the Chrome Web Store reports that there are 300,000 users of New XKit, the Firefox Addon Store reported a healthy number of users before we were taken down, and we having a working Safari build. Needless to say, New XKit is a very stable project.

Now we’re in a position to do something we’ve never done before: host a Town Hall! It’s a meeting where we discuss the New XKit organization, report on the state of this extension, and field any questions you may have. We’re doing this so we can plan our project goals as well as bring visibility to the issues that affect New XKit overall.

The Town Hall will be held this Saturday, 1/16 at 2 PM Pacific/5 PM Eastern/10 PM UTC on our unofficial Discord server. Before you ask, you don’t need to register for an account, and Discord clients are available for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. It’s also available from the web.

Near the end of the Town Hall, we will open up for a Q&A session. Please note that the chat will be moderated; we intend to listen to and answer questions one at a time, not all at once. Furthermore, please do not ask questions about specific problems or bugs you are experiencing. Those questions should be sent to @new-xkit-support or our live chat.

And if you’re feeling eager and can’t wait until Saturday, you can hop in right now and say hi! We don’t bite, promise.

tl;dr:

  • Who: New XKit core developers and the general public (you!)
  • What: Town Hall
  • When: Saturday, 1/16 at 2 PM Pacific/5 PM Eastern/10 PM UTC
  • Where: Our unofficial Discord server
  • Why: Planning for future releases and providing visibility into our project

Month in Review: December 11 - January 08

Happy New Year! Here’s the first set of updates for this year.

Bug Fixes

  • Editable Reblogs v3.0.5: Temporarily disable ER on pages that don’t provide the information it needs to work. We’ll restore this when we’ve done some cleaning on our end, apologies!
  • Find Inactives v0.3.1: This extension is now a polyglot and will work if your user interface language isn’t English.
  • Glowing Follow v1.0.4: Made a variety of fixes, such as improving the short description, fixing iframe URL detection, and so on.
  • Header Options v2.4.1: Unhide the post ribbon being hidden by the mobile scrolling header, and fix an issue with large screen sizes.
  • Messaging Tweaks v1.5.1: Good news, the :+1: emoji now works! I would totally include it in this message if it didn’t ruin the formatting of this post.
  • One-Click Postage v4.1.1: Fixed some weird overlay issues with the reblog icon as well as general code cleanup. Welp, there are fewer misspelled and commented out styles now.
  • Pokés v0.7.1: Just small fixes here, like increasing the species font size and requesting fonts over HTTPS.
  • Reblog Display Options v1.3.1: Remove border from new content if both border and remove new-content username are set.
  • View On Dash v0.7.6: Handle chat posts. Yeah.
  • XKit Preferences v7.2.0: If you’ve ever browsed Tumblr using a mobile device and tried to use the XKit control panel, you may have noticed that it didn’t stay on screen. Well, now it does! (As a properly-behaved preferences window should.)

New Features

Changes in Review

  • Editable Reblogs v3.0.6: Properly redirect after reblogging from a blog page.
  • Add Pale Moon support: Yes, you’ve read that correctly. This is probably going to involve a lot of discussion around determining the amount of extra maintenance we need to do to make this happen.

As always, you can get in touch with us by sending an ask to @new-xkit-support or @new-xkit-discussion or visiting our live support chat. If no one responds in the live chat, it means the developers are currently busy/away/sleeping! Just wait a bit and someone will get back to you!

xkit new xkit Extensions updates Week in Review mod marquis mod xumbra

Hey guys, we’ve been made aware through various channels that about two weeks ago Mozilla changed their policies on Extension Signing—something that we were never notified about, even given that we had reviews open at the time—and we were able to get our extension signed without re-writing it, contrary to what we had been told earlier by Mozilla volunteers.

Anyway, without further ado, we’re proud to present a version of New XKit that works with Firefox 43! Nothing else has changed, it’s literally exactly the same extension you have installed, but working. You’ll still have to download it directly from our github for now because Mozilla won’t show it on their store, but that’s a minor inconvenience in the long run, and we’re working on addressing it.

Anyway, let us know if you have any questions! And as always, if you got any trouble with XKit, you are welcome to join our support chat room. (hosted on gitter, if you want to join with a github account)

About Firefox 43, New XKit and Extension Signing

A lot of you people using Firefox probably already realized: The update to Firefox 43 completely disables New XKit due to it not being signed/verified.

Let me begin by saying that all of us are truly sorry for this inconvenience.
We are trying our best to fix this but currently are unable to give an ETA on how soon this is going to happen.

Mozilla published their plan for extension verification in Feburary, so even when the New XKit project started in July we knew that it was something we were going to have to deal with eventually. We submitted our extension initially to Mozilla on July 20th, and did not hear back from them until November 16th, when Mozilla removed our extension from their online gallery, telling as that we do not meet their requirements to be a publicly listed extension. We then submitted as an “unlisted” extension, which was theoretically a more lenient process. This time they got back to us within about a week, but they would not still not accept the extension the way it was currently written.

There are a lot of technical details that go into the situation, but the bottom line is that we need to rewrite the core of how XKit handles extensions almost completely before getting signed. We’re currently about half-way through that process, and hope to have something to share with you as soon as we can pass validation. The biggest downside that comes with this rewrite though will be our reaction time—we will have to update the entire extension whenever we want to change one of the individual packaged extensions, and third-party (non-signed) XKit Extensions will no longer work.

Until signing happens though, we can offer you 3 workarounds:

  1. Use another browser like Chrome or Opera with New XKit. This is the best solution, as it allows you to still be on the most up-to-date browsers while also using New XKit. You can grab the Chrome version of New XKit from the Chrome Web Store and find instructions for using New XKit with Opera on our blog
  2. Downgrade Firefox to v42. This is less recommended then option 1, but more recommended the option 3. Mozilla provides instructions on how to do this on their wiki
  3. Disable signature checks in Firefox v43. (NOT recommended)

WARNING! Signed extensions a security feature added by Mozilla. Disabling that feature may put you at risk of installing viruses and ad-ware!

Additionally, this fix only works until Firefox v44 hits and the switch gets removed.

If you still want to proceed, type “about:config” in your Address Bar, look for “xpinstall.signatures.required” and double click on it so it has the value “false”.
